To you, the endurance of a practice is its credential. That respect for inherited wisdom is worth keeping. But folded inside nearly every tradition is something older than the eating of flesh — a duty of care for creatures, a reverence for life, an inheritance of keeping the earth rather than plundering it.

Which tradition are you keeping?
Authority and tradition honor order and inherited structure — the accumulated wisdom of the past. The instinct isn’t to fight that. It’s to ask which part of the inheritance runs deeper. Almost every custom carries within it an older thread of compassion or stewardship that predates the habit now built on top of it. You don’t have to break with what you revere. You find the deeper thing you revere, and let the newer habit answer to it.
