You could never hurt an animal

The kindness was always there. It just got covered over.

You well up at footage you didn’t mean to watch. You’d never harm a creature that trusted you. That feeling isn’t naive — it’s the truest thing about you, and it’s been waiting for a way through.

Why it feels so heavy

For most people who move toward veganism, compassion is the door — the oldest and loudest of our values. But it’s also the one most often felt and least often acted on, because the caring sits in one box and the eating in another, and the two are kept from ever touching. The care was never missing. Only the thread between feeling it and living it was cut. Reconnecting that thread is the whole of it — and it’s lighter than you’d expect, because you’re not learning to care. You already do.
