This is how my family has always eaten

You’d never betray your people. This isn’t leaving them — it’s widening the circle.

You feel belonging as a moral good, and you don’t want to be the difficult one at the table. That loyalty is a strength. The question isn’t whether to keep faith with those you love — it’s how big the circle of “us” is allowed to grow.

Belonging doesn’t have to shrink you

Loyalty is devotion to the group — the pull to stand with your own and feel abandonment as a wound. Much of what a new vegan feels as friction isn’t about the animals at all; it’s loyalty firing, registering change as a small treason. But the door here was never to break your bonds. It’s to enlarge them — to offer a wider “us” you can belong to: future generations, the living world, a growing community of others who made the same choice. You’re not being asked to leave your people. You’re being handed a larger one.
