I watched Forks Over Knives on Netflix while I was working abroad in South Korea as an English teacher. Soon after watching the film I got a call saying that an aunt on one side of my family and an uncle on the other were diagnosed with cancer. They both unfortunately passed before I could make it back to the states to see them. After that I watched the film again and went vegetarian for my last year in Korea since there was a lot of pressure at work to consume some form of animal product. I told myself that when I got back to the US, I was going fully vegan, which I did. And after a while I learned about animal sanctuaries and started becoming a regular volunteer at some near me, which introduced me to the animal rights aspect. Then I started watching documentaries like Cowspiracy which introduced me to the sustainability side. The more documentaries I watch now, the more it reinforces that I made the right decision. From "They're Trying To Kill Us" and "The Smell of Money" showing the social justice sides, "Speciesism The Movie" and "Live and Let Live" showing me the more philosophical arguments, "The End of Medicine" and "Eating Our Way To Extinction" showing me the global health and environmental impact, and "The Game Changers" showing me the impact on athletic performance.
