My Unexpected Journey to Veganism

During the pandemic, while much of the world slowed down, our lives seemed to speed up. We were still working full-time in the office—often even on weekends. In the middle of one of those long work stretches, I happened to watch the documentary "What the Health". I didn’t know then that this one moment would change the course of our lives.

At home, my husband had been struggling with severe asthma for years. His attacks were so serious that he had almost died three different times. So when I watched the film and heard personal stories of people whose health dramatically improved on a plant-based diet, something caught my attention. What surprised me most was that many people reported their asthma improving or even disappearing—often when asthma wasn’t even their primary health concern.

I went home thinking about it. I knew my husband well enough to know that if I tried to convince him to watch a health documentary, he probably wouldn’t. So instead, I simply asked him if he wanted to watch a “cool movie” with me.

From the very first minutes, he was completely hooked.

By the time the film ended, we both looked at each other and said the same thing:
“Let’s try this.”

And just like that, we went vegan together.

For me, it felt deeply aligned with something I had always felt in my heart. I’ve always been a passionate animal lover and rescuer, and eating animals has never truly sat right with me. For years, I had already reduced animal products to a bare minimum. This change finally felt like living fully in alignment with my values.

But what happened next completely surprised us.

Within three days, my husband’s asthma was gone. Not improved—gone. And it has never come back.

Our lab results normalized. My migraines disappeared. I lost weight, and my entire body seemed to reshape itself in a natural way. We felt lighter, more energetic, and healthier than we had in years.

But the story didn’t stop with us.

Seeing the transformation we experienced inspired my parents-in-law to try the same lifestyle. They also became vegan—and their health journey was just as incredible.

Across the four of us, we saw improvements that still amaze me today:

-Cholesterol and LDL levels normalized

-A1C returned to healthy ranges

-Psoriasis disappeared

-Cold sores stopped recurring

-Rheumatoid arthritis vanished

-Energy and vitality returned

And I’m sure there are many more improvements I’m forgetting.

Today, we truly love this lifestyle. It’s not just about food—it’s about living with intention. Knowing that our daily choices help protect animals we care so deeply about, while also reducing our footprint on this one beautiful planet we all share, gives us a profound sense of purpose.

What started as a random movie during a busy pandemic workweek became a transformation for our entire family.

Sometimes the smallest moment can open the door to the biggest change.
And for us, it did.
