After I saw some friends turn vegetarian and then vegan, I naturally became curious and started researching the vegan diet. When I read The China Study by Dr Campbell, it became very clear to me that a vegan and plant-based diet was the way for me. Afterwards, I became familiar with other vegan principles besides just the food.

My Vegan Story :
I have always been a dedicated carnivore. I gained a lot of weight and attained 400 lbs, with an insulin pump, a1c of 12.4, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, restricted breathing due to the weight, couldn't move without effort and pain, couldn't walk more than 25 ft or stand for more than 2 min. So I had gastric bypass. I lost 160 lbs in one year because I couldn't hold any food down at all. It's been 3 yrs and I still can't hold down meat or drink cows milk without getting sick. I've come to realize that I can't depend on my old diet to live. I had lost a total of 200 lbs then I gained 50 back due to extreme sweet cravings. I started looking into alternative ways of eating while still getting my protein and meeting more of my nutrient needs. I was leaning towards Mediterranean, pescatarian, flexitarian but I started to look deeper and found youtube videos by Dr. Furhman, Dr. Colin Campbell, Forks over Knives, The Game Changers, etc and my thinking changed. I couldn't stand to hear the pigs screaming in pain or the thought of the emotional devastation of the separation of cows and their calves, the pain that chickens now live through because of overcrowding and hormones that make them grow too much and too fast. I found out I can get my protein from other sources without putting an animal in pain to do it. I am still on the journey and working on my diet with the goal of being fully vegan. I'm not eating meat at all, but I am still eating cheese and cooking with milk or cream when needed. I know there are alternatives to that and am researching product by product. I'm trying not to depend on processed vegan foods but concentrating on whole foods.

After being vegetarian on and off for 20 years, in 2019 I became whole-food plant based (WFPB) after reading the book The Whole Foods Diet by John Mackey and Dr. Alona Pulde and Dr. Matthew Lederman. I was shocked to learn how bad meat, dairy and eggs are for our health - they're literally killing us - so we made the switch the very next week! Our family ditched dairy and eggs and went fully plant based July 7th, 2019.
I continued to research and learn about WFPB eating, and inevitably stumbled across information about the impact of animal agriculture on the environment and the horrors of our treatment of non-human animals. This strengthened my resolve - we were not only going be a healthier family, we were doing the absolute best thing we could do for the environment, and living compassionately and not harming other sentient beings. I am now an ethical vegan, and animal liberation activist.
I continued to research and learn about WFPB eating, and inevitably stumbled across information about the impact of animal agriculture on the environment and the horrors of our treatment of non-human animals. This strengthened my resolve - we were not only going be a healthier family, we were doing the absolute best thing we could do for the environment, and living compassionately and not harming other sentient beings. I just discovered your request that I contact you and therefore I am responding.
Although I am definitely influencing folks to become vegan, I have not always been 100%. I believe that “the perfect can be the enemy of the good.” I have no other vegans in my life and am extroverted, so being vegan remains a real challenge. I am also passionate about exercise (I started a running group decades ago in midMichigan and have run marathons), climate change, learning to love unconditionally and non duality. I follow Dr. McDougall and normally am not connected with the medical establishment. I believe that the medical industry is completely controlled by the drug companies and food industry. I take no prescription drugs or supplements. I am currently power walking six miles a day and have never had a real issue with weight. I have never suffered from chronic pain or had a serious illness. I am very grateful!

My Vegan Story :
For the past several years I have noticed that I felt increasingly woozy starting in December until late April . Late April or early May is the time of year that dandelion, garlic mustard, wild onions, chives start to come up and I start to forage greens and I feel sharp, happy, energetic and healthy. I foraged as usual at the start of the pandemic in 2020 and started looking into getting more veggies into my diet through the winter. I figured that the store bought kale/chickory/beet tops/ other greens that I was buying in the winter would be less nutritious than what I picked in the summer so I'd have to eat more of them. As the pandemic progressed I started losing weight, little at a time, and all over my body. I felt great, had (and still have) lots of energy .
I started to research a program for introducing a plant based diet to a particular ethnic group that was experiencing high rates of obesity and diabetes and saw my diet being touted on several websites and videos. Watching and learning I thought that increasing the variety of greens and grains might be beneficial so I started to pick up a more varied selection of greens added different nuts and added some spices to my diet. Since I keep feeling better and better I figure I'm doing OK and will keep going. I seldom eat out at restaurants so I haven't had to find a vegan restaurant or find items on a regular menu that I can eat, and I still have an occaisional egg a little cheese, or even a small piece of steak when I'm in the mood. But I draw the line at added sugar, "thanks, but not for me" and refined flour. No bread, cake, ice cream etc. My only problem with my diet now, is that I seldom get hungry. I eat a lot of "green" and it seems to keep me feeling satisfied. guess I'm "almost" a vegan. Feeling relaxed about food, Jganvet

How I become a Vegan, here is my story of being vegan.
I started feeling good with myself when I was needed to make a change for Healthy life.
It was important step for my skin care routine and now I am feeling beautiful and glow. Don't eat processed products or go on unhealthy diets, Be bold for the things you want to be done with! Veganism means for me living like a child with clear and clean mind.
It simply gives it more meaning. For me is very important how do we take responsibility & use our own energy and what we do for our planet? All of this change me and the way of thinking. Now my body happy and thankful for being green and vegan.

Weighted 544Lbs in 2013 changed my mind after having server back pain, went to the emergency room 4 times to get a diagnoses after going to the veterans in Durham NC; the doctor told me I had diverticulosis, an inflamed pancreas and fatty liver disease. I put on my clothes she asked: "Where are you going"? My reply was everything you just told me has to do with what I put into my own mouth. At that time I went on a 10 day water fast, in two to three days I has no more pain. I remained on only plant food and by the end of the year I weighted 270 lbs. I went back to eating meat and starting feeling sick, and my stomach started giving me pain. So I've began to return to plant based foods. And my body, life and mind has grown in every direction.

My first exposure to veganism was when I moved to CO in 2008. I had a few friends in grad school that were vegan, and I had also joined a Kung Fu school where the instructors were vegan themselves. My instructors promoted the health benefits of a plant based diet. I remembered that one of them was talking to a fellow student, and they mentioned that 30% of cow's milk is legally allowed to be pus. That was the moment I knew I had to become vegan. It took me a few years to fully make the commitment, mostly because I was worried about what my family and friends would think of me. After moving back to NC, I then became an activist for the animals after learning what happens to animals in the industry.

Went vegan in the summer of 2018. "What the health" documentary was the final push for me. Once I saw that my diet was not hurting just myself ( that, I could live with) , but poorly kept and inhumanely slaughtered animals ( I had told myself before I saw contrary evidence that there was no way the authorities would allow inhumane conditions), and also the planet....everything just clicked into place and made perfect sense to me. All in one instant. It was instantaneous. I became vegan overnight. Rid myself of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms along the way too.

I had been vegetarian for a few years before I became vegan. I became vegetarian with the intention of becoming vegan because I have a moral objection to the exploiting and killing of animals. Interestingly when I first became vegetarian I was almost entirely vegan, due to lack of financial means I pretty much sustained myself on only the cheapest vegetables from the green grocer blitzed and turned into soup.
As became vegan I really enjoyed the possibility for innovation and creativity in vegan cooking (not just random assortments of veg turned into soup). I started creating recipes, particularly ones which created alternatives to non vegan products so as to entice my non vegan friends to try vegan food.
After becoming vegan I noticed some very significant health benefits. I know there is some scientific debate around these and not everyone agrees but this it what I experienced. I was over weight and not really that far from being obese and I struggled to run a mile. I became vegan and noticed I had loads of energy. I got more active and joined a gym, within 3 months I lost around 40lbs! I joined a boxing class and despite a life of inactivity and indulgence my cardio, in just 3 months had reached a point where it was almost unequalled by anyone else in my class. This absolutely shocked me and whilst other factors were at play I feel being vegan is one major one.
I have now, recently started a vegan blog where I hope to share vegan recipes and articles in an easy and accessible way. I notice many recipes have a lot of excess content that can be struggle for people like me who struggle with attention and reading, so I have really tried to streamline mine.

My Vegan Story :
I had been a vegan from 2006 (previously vegetarian in 2000) when according to my primary care physician, my body needed animal protein and instead of disagreeing, I went along with his suggestion. After the next few years of experiencing major stomach pain, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2018. My primary care suggested becoming a vegan once again in 2019, as the stomach issues worsened, and immediately upon going vegan, the stomach paind=s diminished and I have never flet better.

I became a vegan about a year ago because I just felt unhealthy. I was overweight, my skin was pail and dull, so on, etc. The transformation was amazing! I lost 20 lbs and I beamed with healthiness.

I became vegetarian initially after watching the documentary Earthlings which really affected me. It was difficult for me because I grew up eating meat and I would have called myself a big meat eater. It probably took me 3-4 tries to eventually kick the meat habit and it was especially difficult when travelling to places such as Mexico which really do not have the options of say the US/UK.

My Vegan Story :
Katya Gorbacheva aka the Vegan Powerlifter is the 3rd strongest vegan woman on the planet. Katya’s passion is to educate that plants have all the protein you need to get strong and popularizing strength sports among men and women of all ages. She wrote the Vegan Powerlifting Starter Guide to help women obtain confidence through strength training instead of endless diets.
Katya has gotten into powerliftng after college and noticed that eating too much animal protein made her sluggish despite looking lean. Found out why when work offered free blood testing. Cholesterol and triglycerides were borderline risk at 23 y.o.! Katya has decided to give a plant based diet a shot and never looked back. As an environmentalist it only makes sense to be vegan. The ethical argument solidified the commitement to stay cruelty free for life. Now Katya is a mother, raising a vegan baby.

My Vegan Story :
I was never a huge 'meat' eater, and was a bit bothered by my father hiding food from us kids, but he'd serve himself steak, like a big delicacy, and give us kids hamburger helper? By 2015 I was struggling to find my lifelong self, with a lifelong diet, and health, and animal product was the obvious choice. I've forever been an animal lover, more so now than before, and I knew at an early age, but perhaps subconsciously?, that when I saw that McDonalds was professing on their Golden Arches, 'Over x-million burgers served,' that there were restaurants were all over the place and the number was growing. A LOT OF BOVINE WERE SENSELESSLY KILLED because of gluttony and lack of education, and now We are fatter than ever and growing! We are our own keepers and our planet reflects what we are doing. It is not just cows, but all animals, all pieces of land, all parts of the planet, and our whole bodies. Ugh, where do we go from here, is how I feel sometimes.

Wow! What a journey went from mental lillness and poor health to feeling great and making a positive change to the world through health authentic food and eco friendly deliveries. Here is a little about my baby V-Giyan
We are Oxfordshire's only Vegan Punjabi meal delivery service. All of our food is prepared to the highest level combining traditional Punjabi home cooking with modern gastronomy. My Vegan Story :
[ ] It was 1972 that I started my vegetarian journey. I was at WelMet summer camp at age 12. (Howard Stern was a counselor and kitchen boy there with his first radio show!) A fellow camper put a fork in a round deli meat slab and said “baa baa". It was leg of lamb. I see for the first time it's someone’s leg. From then on, I could not eat meat. I could no longer eat someone’s body parts.
In September after summer camp, I saw the film: “Bless The Beasts and the Children.” It’s about boys freeing bison. The bison were to be killed the next day. The boys were trying to save the bison from extinction and being killed. Excellent movie.
I learned to play the song Dona Dona on the guitar. It’s an Israeli song about a calf going to slaughter.
All three things inspired me to stop consuming meat. Still, I ate dairy and fish, not seeing the connection.
- [ ] As an athlete, I had psoriasis, arthritis and migraines. At 19 I had cancer cells burned out. At 21 I finished college and went to visit my vegan Aunt Glory. Here I learned to eat vegan and started to juice fast. This is May 1981. Aunt Glory and her son were living with her best friend, Heart Phoenix and her kids. I learned a lot.
- [ ] After 6 weeks of living with them and mostly fasting, I lost weight and felt great. I mostly fasted the first year of being vegan. I’d eat mostly raw vegan between fasting.
- [ ] Never had cancer cells again. Migraines gone. Pounds dropped off. Psoriasis lessened dramatically.
- [ ] I’ve been vegan ever since.
- [ ] Through my Aunt’s friend Heart Phoenix I learned about her sister’s place, www.GentleWorld.org, the longest running vegan non profit community living together.
- [ ] Been involved since 1981 and have seen veganism grow tremendously. We’ve written and published books (The Cookbook For People Who Love Animals; Vegan Nutrition Pure and Simple; Pregnancy, Children and the Vegan Diet; Incredibly Delicious, The Vegan Paradigm); produced seminars; had vegan Celebrity Banquets; rescued and saved animals; flew banners; gave cooking demos; demonstrated and marched for animal’s rights; were the executive chefs at Animal Rights conferences; took over hotel and restaurant kitchens; opened vegan restaurants and catered. We consulted other vegan restaurants too. We hope the world quickens its pace towards veganism.
1982, Dr. Klaper visited and moved in with us. What a game changer for the world!

My wife and I tiurned 67 in 2021. We both suffered from chronic joint pain and arthritis. I have high blood pressure controlled by meds. My wife has high cholestrol. We were both about overweight. We began researching whole food plant based eating and went fully whole food plant based diet on 14 Feb 2021. The change has been dramatic and many of the chronic physical problems we were experiencing have totally corrected or dramatically improved. We are getting better at the WFPB diet everuy day and will never go back to the western diet that was destroyoing our bodies.
